DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Computational modelling is key to climate science. B
ut models are becoming increasingly complex as we seek to understand our w
orld in more depth and model it at higher fidelity. In the last decade\, c
limate modelling has faced diminishing returns from current hardware trend
s and software techniques. Developing the required models and analysis too
ls to effectively process\, explore\, and derive policy decisions\, with a
high degree of transparency and trust\, remains difficult. In this talk\,
I'll outline some of the challenges in this space\, informed by the work
of the Institute of Computing for Climate Science at Cambridge\, and the c
limate modelling projects we are involve in. I will put forward various id
eas about how programming language tools and systems could better support
climate modelling and their ultimate goals\, highlighting a number of ongo
ing research projects in this space at ICCS on program verification\, tran
sparent visualisations\, and self-describing code.\n\nLink to join virtual
