DESCRIPTION:In the formidable 1931 paper “Uber die Umkehrung der Naturge
setze” (English translation EPJH\n46\, 2021) Schrodinger introduced the
idea of studying non-equilibrium processes that are minimizers of cost\nfu
nctionals motivated by statistical physics considerations. Almost a centur
y afterward\, this idea has been\ninspirational for conceptualizing how th
e second law of thermodynamics applies to physical processes at the\nmicro
and nano scale.\nIn this talk\, I describe the application of generalized
Schrodinger bridges\, i.e. optimal stochastic feedback control of thermod
ynamic costs between assigned end-states\, to the analysis of models of cl
assical\nopen systems such as Landauer’s model of erasure of a bit of me
mory. In particular\, I focus on the case\nwhen the control is a mechanica
l force and inertial effects are taken into account (Langevin-Kramers dyna
 mics).\n\nThe talk is mainly based on\n\n• Sanders\, J.\, Baldovin\, M.\
