DESCRIPTION:This talk will address the question of the role played by wome
n who worked closely with the &ldquo\;great men&rdquo\; of mathematics. As
  a case study\, I will present work that Ellen Abrams\, Benjamin Braun\, a
nd I have done on the early twentieth-century mathematician\, Caroline Eus
tis Seely\, who served for over two decades as the clerk of the American M
athematical Society (AMS). Seely&rsquo\;s career trajectory intersected wi
th Oswald Veblen\, especially during his tenure as president of the AMS fr
om 1923 to 1924. This intersection merged Veblen&rsquo\;s diplomatic and i
 nstitution-building skills with Seely&rsquo\;s technical\, administrative\
, and social expertise to create a synergistic collaboration that would ha
ve important implications for American mathematics.
