DESCRIPTION:It has been argued that historical writing on American mathema
 tics goes back to at least the late\nnineteenth century with the publicati
 on in 1890 of The Teaching and History of Mathematics in&nbsp\;\nthe Unite
 d States by emigre Swiss mathematician\, Florian Cajori.&nbsp\; His book a
 lso marked\, in a sense\,\nthe beginning of the study of the history of Am
 erican mathematics per se. By tracing the historiography\nof mathematics i
 n the United States\, this talk will make the case that the technical hist
 ory of\nmathematics after 1950 represents the major lacuna in the that fie
 ld.
