DESCRIPTION:Active matter describes systems whose constituents convert ene
rgy from their surroundings into directed motion\, such as bacteria or cat
alytic colloids. We present a thermodynamic law for suspensions of such ac
tive particles in the form of a remarkable direct link between their dynam
ics and thermodynamics: The irreversibility is a state function of the the
rmodynamic system parameters for low particle density\, most importantly t
he swim pressure. Like in the famous fluctuation theorems of stochastic th
ermodynamics\, irreversibility is a dynamical measure that quantifies the
amount by which microscopic particle trajectories break time-reversal symm
etry\, without reference to the typically unobservable processes underlyin
 g self-propulsion.
