DESCRIPTION:It is usually taught that atoms are arranged in solids in peri
odic\, repeating patterns - such is the picture of a (perfect) crystal. Ye
t thermodynamics demands that all materials are disordered at finite tempe
rature. Sometimes disorder is random\; more frequently it’s not. In our
research group\, we’re interested in cases where the deviations away fro
m order\, and away from randomness\, are crucial for material function. Th
is talk will describe some of the phenomenology of this so-called "correla
ted" disorder: when and why it occurs\, how we study it\, and the implicat
ions it has for various properties. It will also explore the conceptual li
nk between disorder and flexibility\, in turn highlighting the underlying
importance of geometry and geometric frustration in materials design.\n\nT
alks are priced at £4 for non-Scientific Society members. Scientific Soci
ety members will have free access to all our talks. Lifetime membership co
sts £15 and gives free access to all talks\, members-only events and prio
rity access to oversubscribed SciSoc events.
