DESCRIPTION:I will present the causal set approach to the problem of quant
um gravity as the embodiment of a number of unifying hypotheses. Postulati
ng the primacy of spacetime causal order together with discreteness of spa
cetime unifies the spacetime manifold with its metric. The path integral a
pproach to quantum foundations speaks General Relativity’s language of h
istory and event and unifies quantum and classical dynamics as species of
measure theory. On the other hand\, Einstein wrote in 1954: “The altern
ative continuum-discontinuum seems to me to be a real alternative\; i.e.\,
there is no compromise” and in giving up on the continuum fundamentally
\, one may feel in danger of losing known continuum physics altogether. I
will alleviate this anxiety by giving examples of the recovery of continuu
m concepts from causal set theory and set out some challenges for causal s
et quantum gravity on the immediate horizon.
