DESCRIPTION:The Archaeologial Review from Cambridge would like to invite y
ou to attend the launch event for ARC Volume 39.1 'Human-Insect Entangleme
nt: Past\, Present\, and Future' including a keynote talk by Dr David Smit
 h and a post-talk wine reception. \n\nKeynote: Entangled or Entrapped\; Hu
man Induced Changes to the Beetle Fauna of the UK\n\nAbstract: Hodder’s
‘entanglement of things’ suggests that humans and ‘things’ can sha
re a range of connections\, interdependence and dependences. It is suggest
ed that this includes objects of biological origin and\, most importantly
for the Environmental Archaeologist\, living populations of plants and ani
mals.\n\nIn this paper I will argue that the insect fauna of the British I
sles is a product of such a human/ animal/ plant/ landscape and landuse in
teraction. This will be done by drawing on a range of recent research whic
h looks at how the synanthropic insect fauna develops and changes across c
irca the last 10\,000 years specifically in response to a large-scale chan
ge in land use in the Late Bronze Age and the development of Urban landsca
pes in the Roman Period. It will be suggested that by the end of this sequ
ence of events\, for one party\, this arrangement has moved from entanglem
ent to entrapment.\n\nSpeaker: Dr David Smith (MA CANTAB)\, MA (Sheffield)
. PhD (Shefield)\, FRES. Associate professor of Environmental Archaeology\
 , Classics\, Ancient History and Archaeology\, University of Birmingham.\n
\nDavid Smith has been actively researching the development of the insect
fauna of Northern Europe since 1986. This has concentrated a range of urba
n sites of different dates across the UK. He has also worked on a large nu
mber of deposits taken from ‘natural’ and rural settlement sites acro
ss the last 15\,000 years. David also runs a consultancy that offers archa
eoentomological services to may archaeological units based in the UK and a
 broad.\n\nProgramme: \n16:30 ARC Freshers' Recruitment Event\n17:00 Vol.39
