DESCRIPTION:Melting ice sheets\, record ocean temperatures\, unprecedented
  flooding and droughts: An increasing occurrence of extremes in ice\, ocea
 n and atmospheric conditions raises questions about their causes\, connect
 ions\, and climate impacts. Combining a comprehensive set of observations 
 with innovative statistical approaches and theory\, I will present key dri
 vers of change in the amplitude\, frequency\, and character of ocean and a
 tmospheric variability over the last 70 years. I will discuss changes in t
 he identified drivers over time\, the underlying mechanisms\, and critical
  thresholds. The findings open new possibilities for predictions of Europe
 an weather on timescales from seasons to multi-decades.
