DESCRIPTION:Extremal black holes are exceptional solutions of Einstein’s
equations that arise on the phase transition between gravitational collap
se and dispersion. In this talk\, I will discuss forthcoming work proving
the codimension-one nonlinear asymptotic stability of the extremal Reissne
r–Nordström family of black holes in the spherically symmetric Einstein
–Maxwell-neutral scalar field model\, up to and including the event hori
zon. This work rigorously confirms numerical results of Murata—Reall—T
anahashi from 2013. Joint work with Yannis Angelopoulos (Caltech) and Chri
 stoph Kehle (MIT).
