DESCRIPTION:The Vedi River Valley of Armenia provides an ideal opportunity
for researching diachronic human-landscape relations within a mountain-pl
ain intersection. Since 2022\, we have excavated the Vedi Fortress\, a pro
minent site that defends the entrance to the Valley along the southeastern
edge of the Ararat Plain. Results of this excavation plus extensive surf
ace survey suggest that a new polity developed in the Valley during the La
te Bronze Age (ca 1550-1200 BCE) by fortifying the Valley at multiple site
 s. The Vedi Fortress was burned at 800 BCE\, but was later refortified du
ring the Late Antique (Early Medieval) period (ca 450-650 CE) when Armenia
came under Sasanian rule during the Marzpan system.
