DESCRIPTION:In the mid 80's Lusztig found a concrete method for classifyin
g the\nordinary irreducible representations of a finite reductive group an
d obtaining\nthe dimensions of the representations. This classification wa
s achieved by:\nfirst splitting the irreducible representations up into so
called Lusztig\nseries\, then parameterising the representations in each
Lusztig series by\nirreducible representations of Weyl groups. We discuss
Lusztig's method of\nclassification and the problems that arise when the a
mbient connected reductive\nalgebraic group has a disconnected centre.\n
