DESCRIPTION:In this talk I shall briefly describe the current status of el
 ectric propulsion technology for small\, manned aircraft\; including the e
 lectric Lazair microlight we recently adapted - which had it's maiden flig
 ht last year.  The basic principles of aircraft flight will be discussed i
 n the context of the limitations imposed by electric propulsion systems - 
 in particular\, the low energy-to-mass ratio available in current battery 
 technology.  I shall also stray into the realm of hybrid power technology\
 , where electric motors and internal combustion engines can be combined to
  give the best (or worst !) of both worlds.
