DESCRIPTION:The first question to ask about any assessment is\, what is it
 s purpose? We have seen in recent years public systems of assessment run i
 nto difficulties when they are asked to do too many jobs. So this seminar 
 will consider what can be done to address the issue of the purposes of pub
 lic exams better? Why\, for example\, do students have to take GCSEs\, Eng
 lish language exams\, A levels\, Diplomas\, and vocational assessments? An
 d in this debate\, can we balance the differing needs of those who are sta
 keholders in these assessment systems?
