DESCRIPTION:Null coordinates have been used in numerical relativity in sph
 erical symmetry\, in gravitational wave extraction\, and in simulating adS
 -black hole spacetime. I review the structure of the equations and standar
 d gauge choices. Then I focus on gravitational collapse simulations beyond
  spherical symmetry where the time slices are null cones emerging from a r
 egular central worldline. I show how to deal with problems at the centre\,
  and how to adapt the coordinates to critical collapse. I present a well-p
 osedness result\, and first simulations of axisymmetric scalar field criti
 cal collapse.
