DESCRIPTION:The detection of GW230529 indicated that black hole–neutron
star mergers are promising candidates for multi-messenger observations due
to the presence of a low-mass black hole. Joint observations of gravitati
onal and electromagnetic waves from these mergers provide unique opportuni
ties to constrain the equation of state of neutron stars and to investigat
e the contribution of these events to the abundances of heavy elements via
r-process nucleosynthesis. Numerical relativity simulations are the only
tool able to create a bridge between theory and observations. In this talk
\, we present state-of-the-art simulation results\, examining the impact o
f the neutron star equation of state\, black hole spin and the mass ratio
on gravitational wave signatures and ejecta properties. We also discuss th
e distinguishability of these effects with current and next-generation gra
 vitational wave detectors.
