DESCRIPTION:Cell fate decisions play a major role in the building of tissu
es and organisms. The process depends on the interaction between signallin
g pathways and transcription factors. I shall discuss the possibility that
this interaction results in a calculation and will discuss what is being
calculated and the structure of the machine that does the calculation. Whi
le much of the inspiration for this perspective is derived from genetic st
udies in Drosophila\, our current studies make use of mouse embryonic stem
cells to probe into the hypothesis and its elements.
