on of Japan’s new research icebreaker\, ARV Mirai II - Dr. Takashi Kikuc

DESCRIPTION:I would like to talk about two topics. First is a study to ex
amine sea ice floe size and other characteristics from March to June in th
e Beaufort Sea of the Arctic Ocean. Using MODIS band-1 visible satellite i
magery\, we tried to estimate floe size\, kurtosis\, and skewness of sea i
ce in the Beaufort sea during April-June 2020. The results of both analyse
s clearly indicate that before melting progressed\, the sea ice began to b
reak up\, becoming smaller in size and rounder in shape. These findings c
ontribute to our understanding of the mechanisms driving sea ice loss and
may aid in the development of sea ice forecasting models.\nSecond\, I woul
d like to introduce Japan's new research icebreaker\, Arctic Research Vess
el (ARV) Mirai II. JAMSTEC is now constructing ARV Mirai II and she will
be delivered to JAMSTEC in November 2026. She will be operated as an “i
nternational research platform”\, playing a leading role in internationa
l projects. I would like to talk about progress of the construction and ou
r activities toward establishing ARV Mirai II as international research pl
 atform.
