DESCRIPTION:While clozapine has risks\, relative risk of fatality is overe
 stimated. The UK pharmacovigilance programme is efficient\, but comparison
 s with other drugs can mislead because of reporting variations. Clozapine 
 actually lowers mortality\, partly by reducing schizophrenia-related suici
 des\, but preventable deaths still occur. Clozapine should be used earlier
  and more widely\, but there should be better monitoring and better manage
 ment of toxicity. In this talk\, we will cover the evidence about mortalit
 y in schizophrenia\, the effect of clozapine initiation in mortality and t
 he next steps we should be taking to reduce the mortality gap in people wi
 th SMI.\n
