DESCRIPTION:Self-harm is a common problem among young people and is a seri
ous health concern. Research shows that young people who self-harm are mor
e likely to have mental health difficulties in later life and are at a hig
her risk of suicide. The majority of young people who self-harm do not see
k any formal or informal support\, as they are often unsure who to speak t
o\, and try to cope with their problems alone or believe that no one can h
elp. School staff may be the first adults to notice a young person’s sel
f-harm and are well placed to provide their students with support. However
\, many school staff report that they often do not feel equipped or confid
ent to respond to students who are self-harming. In response to this\, we
have developed an online training programme and resource toolkit for schoo
ls to respond to self-harm called SORTS (Supportive response to self-harm)
. The training takes a whole school approach and is aimed at all school st
aff including those in non-teaching roles. We will present the coproductio
n work involved in developing the resource\, as well as preliminary qualit
ative findings regarding school staff and young people’s perspectives ab
 out schools responding to self-harm.
