DESCRIPTION:*The Phoenix Society Presents: _Professor David Spiegelhalter_
*\n\nThe mathematical language of uncertainty is probability\, but there i
s also a visual language that tries to represent what may turn out to be t
he case. I will look at different ways that people have tried to illustrat
e their uncertainty\, including some recent work in the presentation of po
ssible futures.\n\nDavid is currently the Winston Professor of the Public
Understanding of Risk and a fellow of Churchill College. Much of his resea
rch surrounds the use of statistics in understanding risk for individuals
and society and he has used this in both academic and educational publicat
ions.\nHaving been a consultant to several public and private organisation
s\, he also gave evidence in the Harold Shipman inquiry and led the statis
tical team investigating children's heart surgery at the Bristol Royal Inf
irmary.\nDavid is a Fellow of the Royal Society and was awarded an OBE in
2006 for services to medical statistics.\n\nEntry\, refreshments and wine
are free of charge for University members.\n\nDo sign up on the "Facebook
 event page":http://bit.ly/visualising-uncertainty.\n\n_Image: TimesOnline_
