DESCRIPTION:THIS TALK HAS BEEN CANCELLED OWING TO ILLNESS IN THE SPEAKER's
FAMILY.\n\nThe City of Glasgow Bank collapse in October 1878 was a signif
icant\neconomic and financial shock to the economy. The majority of\nshar
eholders were bankrupted and the collapse had a significant impact\non the
arguments for the adoption of limited liability in banking. This\npaper
sees the collapse in the context of a series of banking crises\nthrough th
e nineteenth century\, and focuses on the learning processes\nexhibited.
It suggests that\, by the end of the century\, a number of\nimportant less
ons about the relationship between banks and industry had\nbeen learned.
The City of Glasgow brought many of these lessons into\nsharp relief\, and
the crisis of 2008 revealed the need to learn many of\nthese lessons once
more. \n\nThere will be a drinks reception afterwards. For more informat
 ion\, contact ddc22.
