DESCRIPTION:When I started doing research on conservation biology\, over 2
0 years ago\, the focus was primarily on assessing and protecting habitats
and species. Taxonomy can be very useful – we all like to organise and
label things after all. However\, we have come to realise it may not suffi
ce to protect the diversity of forms and functions on Earth. To tackle the
twin crises of biodiversity loss and climate change\, conservation has ex
panded its focus to the evolutionary and functional dimensions of biodiver
sity. In this talk I will discuss the benefits and challenges of consideri
ng functional diversity for conservation assessment. How can we measure it
? How can we protect it? And why should you care?
