DESCRIPTION:Composite lattices provide great potential for the fabrication
of ultra-light structures. In\nload bearing applications\, the lattice tr
ansfers load through the structure with the aim of\nusing as little materi
al as possible. Manufacturing these lattice structures from long fibre\nco
mposites composed of strong fibres set in a tough matrix\, allows for furt
her reduction\nin weight whilst retaining strength\, as composite material
s intrinsically possess very high\nstrength to weight ratios. The foci of
this research are (i) to explore the potential\nof fully composite lattice
structures as high performance materials\, breaking into as yet\nuncharte
red property space\, (ii) devise manufacturing techniques to enable the fa
brication\nof such structures\, and (iii) determine the performance of the
se structures\, particularly\nwith regard to the micromechanical failure p
 rocesses that occur.\n
