DESCRIPTION:Recent Australian-led field campaigns in East Antarctica and t
he Southern Ocean have provided a wealth of cloud\, precipitation and aero
sol data which we are using to understand the unique microphysical process
es in this region. The data are invaluable for the evaluation and improvem
ent of a range of forecast and climate models\, including the UM. These ca
mpaigns took place to help address the persistent large uncertainties in s
urface radiation in climate models this region. In this talk\, I will disc
uss some recent research highlights and focus on linking our observations
directly to model evaluation and improvement. I shall also describe future
field campaigns and the science questions we seek to answer.
