DESCRIPTION:In 1953\, Oswald Veblen was arguably&nbsp\;the&nbsp\;&eacute\;
 minence grise of the American mathematical community\, a mathematician dis
 tinguished for his research\, his service to mathematics both nationally a
 nd internationally\, and his service to his country in two world wars.&nbs
 p\; Yet\, in 1953\, Veblen&rsquo\;s request for passport renewal was denie
 d on the basis of the &ldquo\;allegation that for years [he] had been a &l
 squo\;concealed member of the Communist Party.&rsquo\; &rdquo\;&nbsp\; Thi
 s talk will examine the State Department&rsquo\;s case against him in the 
 context of the Red-hunting of the McCarthy Era.
