SUMMARY:Development of New Methods for Catalytic C–H Functionalization:
Critical Interplay between Catalyst Design and Mechanistic Analysis - Prof
essor Melanie Sanford\, University of Mighigan\, USA

DESCRIPTION:This seminar will discuss my group’s development of new tran
sition metal catalyzed reactions for the selective functionalization of ca
rbon–hydrogen bonds. The talk will specifically focus on detailed mechan
istic investigations and studies of model high oxidation state Pd complexe
s as a key driver for the development of new catalysts and new reactions i
n this area. This will be illustrated in the context of several important
 transformations\, including: Pd-catalyzed ligand directed C–H arylation
reactions and the Pd and Pt-catalyzed direct functionalization of arenes/a
lkanes. In each case\, mechanistic studies/model complexes have provided c
ritical insights for the development of novel catalysts with enhanced acti
vity and/or selectivity for the key transformation.
