DESCRIPTION:We present the birational classification of complex algebraic 
 varieties\, namely their division into fibrations of canonically polarized
 \, Calabi-Yau\, and Fano varieties. We then give a brief introduction to m
 oduli theory and describe some applications to elliptic fibrations and mod
 uli spaces of curves. If time permits\, we will apply this theory to deriv
 e the Enriques-Kodaira classification of algebraic surfaces.
