DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores the evolution of the Bank of Englan
d in the aftermath of the First World War. It describes how and why the Ba
nk began employing technical advisers to determine economic policy. Althou
gh the Bank's primary goal was to defend the status of the City of London
as an international financial centre\, it became increasingly involved in
areas unprecedented for a central bank\, including industrial policy\, for
eign affairs and imperial relations. In the aftermath of the Great Depress
ion and amidst preparations for another world war\, the Bank ended the int
erwar years as a public-oriented institution.
