SUMMARY:Tribology at the Smallscale: Learning from Nature - Prof John Will
 iams (CUED)

DESCRIPTION:The phenomenon of miniaturisation now extends beyond electroni
cs into the realms of mechanical and fluid systems. At such small scales\,
the phenomena of adhesion\, friction and wear - all aspects of tribology
  - can be crucial features of device operation. Nature has had millennia t
o develop tribological solutions at a variety of scales and the talk will
illustrate the relevance of some of these\, the biomimetic ideas which the
y suggest and some of the challenges that face the next generation of trib
 ologists.\n
