DESCRIPTION:Vaccinating Against Fake News.\n\nMuch like a viral contagion\
, misinformation can spread rapidly from one mind to another. Moreover\, o
nce lodged in memory\, falsehoods are difficult to correct. Inoculation th
eory offers a natural basis for developing a psychological ‘vaccine’ a
gainst the spread of fake news and misinformation. Specifically\, in a ser
ies of lab and field studies\, I’ll show that it is possible to pre-empt
ively “immunize” people against disinformation about a wide range of t
opics by pre-exposing them to severely weakened doses of the techniques th
at underlie its production. This process of ‘prebunking’ helps people
cultivate cognitive antibodies in both simulated and real social media env
ironments. I’ll showcase several interventions we developed and evaluate
d—with public health authorities and social media companies—to help ci
tizens around the world recognize and resist unwanted attempts to influenc
 e and mislead.\n\nAll welcome. More details\, including a booking link\, a
