DESCRIPTION:Aircraft engines emit exhaust gases and particles into the atm
osphere\, impacting the environment\, leading to air pollution and contrib
uting to climate change. Our atmosphere is a complex system of coupled non
-linear physical and chemical processes\, and evolves over time. This mean
s that for some pollutants\, the same emissions mass will have different i
mpacts depending on where and when it is emitted. In the quest to make avi
ation’s transition to sustainability as efficient and effective as possi
 ble\, technological (aircraft & engine designs)\, operational\, and regula
tory interventions would need to account for these atmospheric systems and
processes. This talk will cover a set of modeling approaches quantifying
how atmospheric non-linearities affect the pollution and climate impacts f
rom aircraft operations globally. We will also discuss novel data-driven w
ays of estimating real-world emissions of the aviation sector.
