DESCRIPTION:This talk will begin with a brief description of the National 
 Science Foundation’s organization\, and it’s role in US Government-fun
 ded R&D.  The two Geotechnical Engineering programs\, as well as related p
 rograms\, will be described and examples given of past and current researc
 h.  Methods used to direct the focus of NSF-funded research will be discus
 sed.  The speaker will then provide his thoughts on priority areas of Geot
 echnical Engineering research\, including areas related to energy\, global
  climate change\, and sustainability.   This will lead to a discussion of 
 opportunities and mechanisms for international collaborations\, with parti
 cular reference to Cambridge –US cooperation.
