DESCRIPTION:When is it OK to kill people? This paper explores views on bl
oodshed in the Christian and Jewish traditions. It traces the concept of
the ‘image of God’ from Ancient Near Eastern contexts\, through biblic
al usage\, and in subsequent Christian and Jewish theological understandin
gs. What happens when a sacred concept previously applied specifically to
royalty is applied ‘democratically’ to all human beings? And how are
restrictions on bloodshed changed if the image of God is understood as re
ferring only to the soul and not to the body?\n
