DESCRIPTION:Extreme weather events are among the most salient outcomes of
climate change. In recent years\, the science of "extreme event attributio
n" has emerged\, with the aim of distinguishing the subset of extreme weat
her events that are attributable to anthropogenic climate change from thos
e that are not. A number of authors have recently suggested that such attr
ibution studies can be used to distinguish the "real victims of climate ch
ange" from persons harmed by "bad luck weather"\, and that drawing this di
stinction among impacted persons is necessary for the pursuit of climate j
ustice. This talk rejects the use of extreme event attribution as a means
for recognising the victims of climate change on both practical and mo
ral grounds\, and suggests an alternative evidential standard for the reco
 gnition of climate victimhood.
