DESCRIPTION:The existence problem for minimal hypersurfaces (or more gener
 ally prescribed mean curvature hypersurfaces) in complete non-compact mani
 folds is fundamental\, but little is known. Min-max provides a powerful fr
 amework for existence in closed manifolds\, but relies critically on compa
 ctness. I will present a new localization technique to adapt min-max theor
 y to non-compact manifolds.
