DESCRIPTION:Severi varieties parametrize integral curves of fixed\ngeometr
 ic genus in a given linear system on a surface. In this talk\, I\nwill dis
 cuss the classical question of whether Severi varieties are\nirreducible a
 nd its relation to the irreducibility of other moduli\nspaces of curves. I
  will indicate how tropical methods can be used to\nanswer such irreducibi
 lity questions. The new results are from ongoing\njoint work with Xiang He
  and Ilya Tyomkin.
