DESCRIPTION:The geometry of curves carrying pencils with prescribed ramifi
 cation is regulated by the so called adjusted Brill-Noether number. In thi
 s talk I will discuss the problem of existence and dimension of Brill-Noet
 her varieties in this context and compare it to the classical one without 
 imposed ramification. The new results are based on joint work with Andreas
  Leopold Knutsen.
