DESCRIPTION:“Emerging evidence suggests that COVID-19 causes significant
damage to vascular barriers\, especially the brain\, and typically withou
t directly entering the impacted organs. My seminar will discuss my lab’
s work on the direct and indirect ways in which SARS-CoV-2 disrupts the bl
ood-brain barrier and thereby increasing the incidence and severity of cer
ebrovascular insult including stroke and vascular dementia. Furthermore\,
I will present our recent identification of a common (25-40% of the global
population) genetic polymorphism that dramatically increases the risk of
SARS-CoV-2 infection leading to Parkinson’s disease.”
