DESCRIPTION:The Global Water Initiative\, founded by a partnership between
  the the University of Cambridge and the University of California San Dieg
 o\, aims to be an animating node in a network of networks connecting unive
 rsity research to regional and local adaptation to climate change\, primar
 ily in the area of water.  After an introductory discussion setting forth 
 the need for a new design for the assessments  supporting adaptation to\, 
 rather than mitigation of\, climate change\,  we discuss activities starti
 ng or under way in the UK\, California\, Ghana\, India\, China\, Italy\, a
 nd Mexico.
