DESCRIPTION:Edward Turnham will present a paper from Sophie Denève:\n\nBa
 yesian Spiking Neurons I: Inference\, Neural Computation (2008)\, v20\, p9
 1-117\n\nhttp://www.gnt.ens.fr/reprints/Deneve2008a.pdf\n\nAbstract\n\nWe
show that the dynamics of spiking neurons can be interpreted as a form of
Bayesian inference in time. Neurons that optimally integrate evidence abou
t events in the external world exhibit properties similar to \nleaky integ
rate-and-fire neurons with spike-dependent adaptation and maximally respo
nd to fluctuations of their input. Spikes signal the occurrence of new in
formation—what cannot be predicted from the past \nactivity. As a result
\, firing statistics are close to Poisson\, albeit providing a determinis
 tic representation of probabilities.
