DESCRIPTION:Recent work in agrarian history has radically revised our unde
rstanding of the dynamics of tenurial change in early modern England. The
conventional picture of a long-term transformation of tenure from copyhold
to leasehold has been replaced by a more nuanced understanding the signif
icance of the long-term survival of copyhold. This paper\, conversely\, an
alyzes the evidence for the transition from copyhold to freehold in the si
xteenth\, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries\, and argues for the signif
icance of enfranchisement for the reconfiguration of rural social relation
s and for the mobilization of political rights.
