DESCRIPTION:A complete\, independent set of local unitary invariants for a
n n-party system would enable one to characterise all the types of entangl
ement that could occur in that system. Unfortunately\, it is hard to come
up with such a set\, even for pure qubit states\, and this has only been d
one for n <=4. The number of invariants grows exponentially with n\, so th
e enterprise looks a bit daunting. I will describe a set of 2^n invariants
that accounts for about half of them. Furthermore\, the set of invariants
has a simple hierarchical structure. There is also a hint as to how one m
ight go looking for the other half.
