 f provocative and rarely screened films opens with a memorable classic fro
 m the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.\n\nFernando de Fuentes (dir.)\, El com
 padre Mendoza/ Godfather Mendoza (1933)\n[with English subtitles]\n\n'Set 
 at the height of the revolutionary violence and instability the film follo
 ws the intricate forging of allegiances by the landowning elite during the
  struggle between Zapatista revolutionaries and Federalist troops. The mor
 dant exploration of personal loyalty and betrayal between 'hacendado' and 
 zapatista soldier dramatizes a pointed commentary on the self-interested a
 mbivalence of the Mexican middle-class during the revolutionary years. The
  film was regarded as problematic by the government of the time and was 'r
