DESCRIPTION:\nThe geomagnetic signal contains information on the structure
 \, dynamics and thermal evolution of the Earth. In this talk I will presen
 t some elements of the dynamo theory\, which aims at understanding the ori
 gin of this signal\, and the results of a few numerical modelling studies 
 attempting to interpret this signal. More specifically\, I will show how t
 he search for similarity laws could allow us to bridge the parameter space
  gap existing between numerical models and natural \nobjects\, to produce 
 useful models of the long-term evolution of the geodynamo.
