tific insight to real-time digital quality assurance - Paul Hooper\, Depar
tment of Mechanical Engineering\, Imperial College

DESCRIPTION:In-process monitoring has given us fantastic scientific insigh
t into the physics of metal additive manufacturing processes\, providing n
ew understanding of melt pool dynamics\, plume behaviour\, and defect form
ation mechanisms. However\, translating this insight into industrial-scale
quality assurance remains a challenge\, despite the availability of senso
rs and software from machine manufacturers. This talk will explore the sci
entific progress achieved through in-process monitoring\, including the id
entification of defect-causing phenomena and their detection to generate 3
D maps of porosity and critical defects. It will also discuss emerging app
roaches to digital quality assurance\, including the integration of machin
e learning and non-destructive evaluation methodologies\, and how they can
accelerate the qualification and adoption of metal additive manufacturing
  technology.
