DESCRIPTION:This talk reports on a mixture of old and new\nwork concerning
the construction of representations of\nthe modular group into Isom(X) us
 ing Pappus's Theorem.\nHere&nbsp\; X = SL_3(R)/SO(3) .&nbsp\; &nbsp\;One n
ew thing is the interpretation\nof the Pappus modular groups as symmetry g
roups of patterns of geodesics\nin X which have the same asymptotic proper
ties as the edges\nof the Farey triangulation of the hyperbolic plane.&nbs
p\; &nbsp\; I will explain\nat least briefly how this point of view leads
to a complete\ncharacterization of the Barbot component of discrete faithf
ul\nrepresentations of the modular group into Isom(X).
