DESCRIPTION:Magnetic materials are an unending source of fascinating physi
cal behaviour which have fundamental appeal but also important technologic
al applications.\nIn order to understand\, quantify and predict the proper
ties of magnetic materials\, we need information about the magnetic exchan
ge interactions\, which control how the different magnetic atoms interact
with each other and respond to external stimuli.\nIn this talk\, I will gi
ve an overview on first-principles approaches to the calculation of magnet
ic exchange interactions using density functional theory (DFT). First I wi
ll outline how the properties of magnetic materials can be computed with a
nd what capabilities are offered by different DFT codes. Next I will discu
ss how to map DFT calculations to spin models and when such a mapping is e
xpected to work\, followed by a discussion of the two main approaches to c
ompute magnetic exchange interactions. Lastly\, I will explain how to obta
in simple information from the computed magnetic exchange interactions\, s
uch as the magnetic ground state and the spin wave spectrum\, and how to c
onnect to atomistic spin dynamics\, Monte Carlo and micromagnetic simulati
 ons.\n
