DESCRIPTION:We study Grothendieck's Lefschetz standard conjecture\non a sm
 ooth complex projective variety. In degree 2\,\nwe reduce it to a local st
 atement concerning local\ndeformations of vector bundles on X. When X is\n
 hyperkahler\, we give explicit criteria which imply\nthe conjecture\, usin
 g Verbitsky's theory\nof deformations of hyperholomorphic bundles.
