DESCRIPTION:Quantum invariants such as the Jones polynomial have reshaped
our understanding of knot theory\, revealingunexpected connections between
algebra\, geometry\, and physics. Their development goes hand-in-handwith
major advances in (modular) Lie theory\, including quantum groups\, Hecke
  algebras\, and their categorifiedanalogs.\nIn this visual talk\, I will r
eflect on how the evolution of low-dimensional topology led me to seriousl
yconsider the question in the title\, and I will even share some partial a
 nswers.
